    Systems And Method To Deliver Addressable Advertisements

    System and method are disclosed for customizable ad delivery to targeted clients with efficient bandwidth usage. The system includes an ad server, asynchronous ad delivery server and an ad client. The ad client in a set top box (STB) device periodically requests for a set of possible ads from the asynchronous ad delivery server. The asynchronous ad delivery server is directly interfaced to the ad server and communicates with the ad server to determine a set of possible ads. The ad delivery server responds to the client request for possible ads by generating the customized ads. The asynchronous ad delivery server delivers customized ads to STB client storage. The STB client shows the customized ads from storage. The ad content cache is limited only by the size of the storage on the STB, which may be used effectively to minimize bandwidth demand by scheduling ad requests during lean usage period

    Robotic Assistant Systems for Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

    Recently, there has been a significant movement in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (OHNS) toward minimally invasive techniques, particularly those utilizing natural orifices. However, while these techniques can reduce the risk of complications encountered with classic open approaches such as scarring, infection, and damage to healthy tissue in order to access the surgical site, there remain significant challenges in both visualization and manipulation, including poor sensory feedback, reduced visibility, limited working area, and decreased precision due to long instruments. This work presents two robotic assistance systems which help to overcome different aspects of these challenges. The first is the Robotic Endo-Laryngeal Flexible (Robo-ELF) Scope, which assists surgeons in manipulating flexible endoscopes. Flexible endoscopes can provide superior visualization compared to microscopes or rigid endoscopes by allowing views not constrained by line-of-sight. However, they are seldom used in the operating room due to the difficulty in precisely manually manipulating and stabilizing them for long periods of time. The Robo-ELF Scope enables stable, precise robotic manipulation for flexible scopes and frees the surgeon’s hands to operate bimanually. The Robo-ELF Scope has been demonstrated and evaluated in human cadavers and is moving toward a human subjects study. The second is the Robotic Ear Nose and Throat Microsurgery System (REMS), which assists surgeons in manipulating rigid instruments and endoscopes. There are two main types of challenges involved in manipulating rigid instruments: reduced precision from hand tremor amplified by long instruments, and difficulty navigating through complex anatomy surrounded by sensitive structures. The REMS enables precise manipulation by allowing the surgeon to hold the surgical instrument while filtering unwanted movement such as hand tremor. The REMS also enables augmented navigation by calculating the position of the instrument with high accuracy, and combining this information with registered preoperative imaging data to enforce virtual safety barriers around sensitive anatomy. The REMS has been demonstrated and evaluated in user studies with synthetic phantoms and human cadavers

    Analysis of School Food Safety Programs Based on HACCP Principles

Journal of Child Nutrition and Management, 38(1).Purpose/Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine how school districts have implemented food safety programs based on HACCP principles. Specific objectives included: 1. Evaluate how schools are implementing components of food safety programs and 2. Determine foodservice employees food-handling practices related to food safety. Methods: The study included a national sample of 34 school districts in eight states, including 11 small, 9 medium, 6 large, and 8 mega districts. Six researchers collected data on-site in each of the school's food production facilities. Data collection instruments included a Facility Observation Form, a Food Safety Observation Form, and a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) Verification Checklist. All instruments were pilot tested prior to use. The research protocol was reviewed and approved by the University's Institutional Review Board prior to data collection. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics. A recent health inspection report was collected from each school and qualitative data were also compiled. Results: Of 34 schools visited, food safety plans were available in 33 schools, although few were customized to the specific school. Most of the recommended standard operating procedures related to HACCP were used. However, researchers found few records of corrective actions. The health inspection scores for most schools were high, which reflects that food safety practices had been adequately operationalized. Overall, school facility observations were positive. Approximately 60% of employees failed to wash their hands as recommended by the 2009 Food Code. Most employees washed their hands before preparing food, but many times, improper hand washing procedures were used. Applications to Child Nutrition Professionals: School foodservice employees performed well, but there are opportunities for food contamination to occur. Directors and managers can utilize this data to evaluate their food safety programs and practices to assure they are achieving their intended goal to serve safe and wholesome food to schoolchildren

    We have assembled a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, surgeons, clinicians and neuroscientists from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Western University to develop a new device for assessing hand function. It will be capable of sensitively measuring fingertip forces across all five fingers and along all movement directions.     In search of lost time: When people start an exercise program, where does the time come from? A randomized controlled trial

    The objective of this study was to investigate changes in use of time when undertaking a structured exercise program.This study used a randomized, multi-arm, controlled trial design.A total of 129 insufficiently active adults aged 18-60 years were recruited and randomly allocated to one of three groups, a Moderate or Extensive six-week exercise group (150 and 300 additional minutes of exercise per week, respectively) or a Control group. Prescribed exercise was accumulated through both group and individual sessions. Use of time was measured at baseline and end-program using the Multimedia Activity Recall for Children and Adults, a computerized 24-h recall instrument.     StarRunner: A Single-Stage-to-Orbit, Airbreathing, Hypersonic Propulsion System

    40th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference And Exhibit Fort Lauderdale, FL, July 11-14, 2004.In response to the request for proposal (RFP) for the 2003 AIAA Undergraduate Team Engine Design Competition, the FAS Propulsion Design team from the Georgia Institute of Technology presents StarRunner: A Single-Stage-to-Orbit (SSTO), Airbreathing, Hypersonic Propulsion System. Low-cost, highly reliable access to low-Earth orbit (LEO) and the International Space Station (ISS) is an area of continuing research and debate. StarRunner is proposed to supplement a notional Crew Transfer Vehicle through the ability to deliver a 25,000 lb payload to the ISS. The horizontal takeoff/horizontal landing (HTHL) vehicle makes use of a turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) propulsion system consisting of 14 low-bypass-ratio turbofan engines and a dual-mode ramjet/scramjet propulsion system for high-speed flight. The vehicle also takes advantage of ultra-high-temperature ceramic thermal protection materials and uses hydrogen fuel for regenerative cooling of engine components. StarRunner is compatible with standard runways, with a gross takeoff weight of approximately 1,000,000 lbs, and has a cost per pound to orbit of approximately $825/lb. This advanced, fully reusable space transport vehicle and integrated propulsion system design demonstrates student efforts to understand issues facing the space launch community. Future enabling and enhancing technologies for TBCC SSTO launch vehicles are explored and analyzed. The final StarRunner design addresses and proposes several innovative solutions to traditional problems

    Maternal Cigarette Smoking during Pregnancy and Offspring Externalizing Behavioral Problems: A Propensity Score Matching Analysis

    A body of empirical research has revealed that prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke is related to a host of negative outcomes, including reduced cognitive abilities, later-life health problems, and childhood behavioral problems. While these findings are often interpreted as evidence of the causal role that prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke has on human phenotypes, emerging evidence has suggested that the association between prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke and behavioral phenotypes may be spurious. The current analysis of data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) revealed that the association between prenatal exposure to cigarette smoke and externalizing behavioral problems was fully accounted for by confounding factors. The implications that these findings have for policy and research are discussed

    Comparison of estimated 20-Hz pulse fin whale source levels from the tropical Pacific and Eastern North Atlantic Oceans to other recorded populations

J.M.O. was funded under Award: N00014-16-1-2860 also from the Office of Naval Research.Passive acoustic monitoring, mitigation, animal density estimation, and comprehensive understanding of the impact of sound on marine animals all require accurate information on vocalization source level to be most effective. This study focused on examining the uncertainty related to passive sonar equation terms that ultimately contribute to the variability observed in estimated source levels of fin whale calls. Differences in hardware configuration, signal detection methods, sample size, location, and time were considered in interpreting the variability of estimated fin whale source levels. Data from Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean and off Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean provided the opportunity to generate large datasets of estimated source levels to better understand sources of uncertainty leading to the observed variability with and across years. Average seasonal source levels from the Wake Island dataset ranged from 175 to 188 dB re 1 μPa m, while the 2007–2008 seasonal average detected off Portugal was 189 dB re 1 μPa m. Owing to the large inherent variability within and across this and other studies that potentially masks true differences between populations, there is no evidence to conclude that the source level of 20-Hz fin whale calls are regionally or population specific.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
